American Lit and Film
92 minutes

1.     Watch scene from Far From Heaven (21:30-25:30) and identify these techniques: dissolve, tilt, pan, and dutch angle. Review and identify sound techniques (diegetic, non-diegetic and internal diegetic).
2.     View the opening scene of Apocalypse Now and take notes and discuss film techniques in this clip
3.     Introduction to The Outsiders: As a class, read the Dear Reader pages and then read the first 3 pages out loud.
4.     In your notebooks, skip a page (leaving room to finish the Liberty! video notes) and begin a new page titled “The Outsiders character and conflicts lists, September 22, 2017.”  Create a three column chart that looks like the chart below:

Character Name
What kind of person is this character? How is this character described in the book?
Conflicts that this character has and who or what does this character conflict with?
Narrator/Ponyboy
Likes movies, has light brown hair and greenish-gray eyes, is a Greaser, is poor, …etc.
Has conflict with the Socs  because they jump Greasers…etc.
Darry

Working with a partner, take notes on at least three characters introduced so far. Then whip around the room and add to notes if necessary.

5.     On your own and silently, continue reading and taking notes. Read at least to the end of chapter 2 (page 36)

HOMEWORK: Continue reading your independent novel. You should finish reading it by Wednesday, Oct. 4.
